Ingredients

  • 0.75 cup water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3.25 cups bread flour
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1.5 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 Tablespoons cold water
  • 1 Tablespoon poppy seeds

Directions

  1. Place all ingredients other than the last three in a stand mixer, mix into dough.
  2. Divide dough into three ropes. Braid together in classic challah shape.
  3. Cover and let rise in a warm place until double (about 45 minutes).
  4. Mix egg yolk with cold water and brush over braided dough. Sprinkle with poppy seeds.
  5. Bake in a 375-degree oven until golden brown (about 25 minutes).
